Hooked Rugs

All primitive Beginnings hooked rugs are hand made in Zionsville, Pennsylvania, by Karey Poniktera. Each rug is hooked using 100% wool.  Because all rugs are made by hand, no two are ever the same. Each rug is unique and a one-of-a-kind. Hooked pieces attached to benches may vary in size; please contact Primitive Beginnings for exact dimensions of bench.

Hooked Rugs can be customized to any size. Custom pieces can be completed using hand- or mill-dyed wool, but in general the price per square foot runs about $138.  Design possibilities are endless, and can be as creative as your imagination, whether whimsical, primitive or traditional.   For custom orders, please contact Primitive Beginnings to discuss your specific needs and estimated delivery date. Please note:  Hooked Rugs are custom made, therefore orders are non-refundable

A Brief History of Rug Hooking: Rug hooking started in the United States in the Mid-1800's.  Like many art forms, it started more as a necessity than a craft.  Hooked rugs were used on the floors in the summer and on the beds in winter. The first rugs were made out of scrap material, including worn clothing and old discarded blankets. The base of the rug was traditionally made from burlap feed sacks. As time went on, hooked rugs became prized for their beauty and dimension and were bought and sold as pieces of art.  By the 1940’s, rug hooking had become a well-established hobby, and continues today as a colorful piece of American heritage.
