Celebrating the Summer Solstice

Known as being the height of summer (the longest day and the shortest night of the year) this is also an event celebrated by yoga aficianados. It’s a time to celebrate the abundance of the earth and to set new goals before the Winter Solstice.

Our Marketing Manager (and yoga instructer) shares our new line of yoga apparel, and how you can participate in this day to celebrate summer!

Usually the summer solstice falls between June 20th and 22nd. This year, the summer solstice falls on the same day as the UN-appointed “International Day of Yoga”, Wednesday June 21st. In typical yoga fashion, there is the practice of 108 sun salutations (Surya Namaskar in Sanskrit) to salute to the beginning of summer and to pay homage to yoga’s roots. Sun Salutations are an important part of the yoga practice and usually done in more repetition at the beginning of the yoga class to set the tempo, then systematically throughout the practice, more sun salutations are introduced, some with variations and additional poses added to the sequence.

The number 108 has importance in the yogic tradition as that isthe number of beads in a mala necklace. In addition, 1 + 0 + 8 = 9 which is considered the number of wholeness in yogic philosophy. Since international yoga day was officially created in 2014, more people are practicing yoga than ever, with over 20 million people practicing yoga in the United States.

Tips from a yoga instructor for a sun salutation yoga practice on Wednesday

If you decide to do a 108 sun salutation yoga practice on your own, start slow and find your rhythm with your breath by beginning with standing forward folds and backbends. You can count any variation of sun salutations towards your 108. The idea is to let the internal rhythm lead you to the next number. Connecting your breath with your movement, the daunting 108 will diminish quickly as you practice.  From there, you can go into classical sun salutations that involve low lunges or into the full versions with warrior 1 and 2 transitions.

There are many studios and classes that have themed classes, so check them out! Also, if you  feel any dizziness or pain during the practice, always stop, and see if you need to stop the practice or reduce.

 Have fun and breathe!
